Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When does the season start? The beginning of November starts USA Wrestling season. It ends with a state series in March. At TWA, we practice year round though! April through October is considered off season training.

  2. What is the likelihood my child will get hurt? I find wrestling to be one of the safest sports actually. It is one on one and there is an official who stops action when moves become potential dangerous. Their number one job is the safety of the wrestler. Your wrestler will wrestle people the same weight and close to the same age.

  3. What is the gear required to practice and to compete in tournaments? At TWA, we require headgear during Level 2 and above practices. Other than that, we recommend mouth pieces and athletic cups. During competition, wrestlers will be required to have wrestling shoes, headgear, and a singlet.

  4. Does my son have to wear a cup? No but it is recommended.

  5. What about a mouth guard? No but Coach Wait highly recommends it.

  6. When are the tournaments? Mainly on Saturdays and Sundays during November through March. We also participate in many summer tournaments.

  7. How does the point system work? See handout of referee signals and awarding of points.

  8. What is a tech fall? When a wrestler gets a certain amount of points ahead of the other wrestler, it is considered a technical decision. It is currently 15 in folkstyle, 10 in freestyle, and 8 in Greco Roman.

  9. What happens if one of the children gets too hurt to finish the match? Who wins? If a wrestler is unable to continue, the other wrestler wins. Unless, the wrestler was injured by an illegal move. In that case, the injured wrestler wins.

  10. What is takedown tournament? It is a tournament where the points are only awarded for takedowns. Some allow a small amount of wrestling after the takedown but not for very long.

  11. What is the difference between wrestling styles? Folkstyle: schools use this style and the scoring happens differently than the other styles. Freestyle and Greco Roman: These are the international and Olympic styles of wrestling. In Greco Roman, the wrestler cannot use their legs nor attack other wrestler’s. These styles are rewarded via points highly for throws.

  12. What style does TWA teach? We teach all styles. November through March is folkstyle season, April through July is Freestyle and Greco Roman, then again July through October is folkstyle.

  13. What is the difference between a novice and an open tournament? A novice tournament generally means first year of experience or the wrestler lost 50% of matches the year prior.  An Open tournament is any level of wrestler. Each tournament has their own criteria for what constitutes a novice level wrestler.

  14. Does my wrestler have to compete in every tournament? No. Coach Wait will always steer the wrestler towards the correct level of competition.

  15. Why does each tournament cost money to enter? Is there a fee at the door? The tournaments cost money because there are many costs associated with hosting a tournament such as medals, referees, facilities, etc. Tournaments are also a good fundraiser for clubs to raise money to fund their program needs. There is typically an entry fee at the door ranging from $3-5.

  16. Why can’t I be mat side? Parents, unless they are part of the 2 coaches allowed matside, are not allowed matside for a few reasons. Safety, space constraints, added stress and confusion for the wrestler.

If your entry fee has not been paid prior to competition day, there will be a late collection fee assessed.

  33. What are remote weigh ins? This is typically when we conduct a group weigh in at the gym prior to the tournament as opposed to having to weigh your wrestler in on site at the location they will be competing. We cannot always guarantee to host a remote weigh in but we do attempt to do so as frequently as possible. Do not request a special weigh in time just for your child due to any reason. The remote weigh ins are held as a group following scheduled practice time. If you have a conflict with our team remote weigh in time, you will need to arrange to weigh your athlete on site at the tournament location.
